American Cheese Month

A Celebration in Every Meal

May 12 2023

Hooray for May!  Not just because of the beautiful weather and backyard BBQs, but because it’s American Cheese Month!  American Cheese has its own month?  Why, yes, it does!  Brought to you by the American Cheese Society and the American Cheese Education Foundation, American Cheese Month is a chance to celebrate the American-made cheeses you love and honor those who helped bring them to your table – from the farms to the factory to the store and everything in between.

At breakfast time, as you are sprinkling shredded Cheddar into your cheese omelette, or whipping up a cheesy Dairy Brunch for your family, reflect on the family farm where it all started.  As part of a farmer-owned cooperative, the cheeses manufactured at our creamery in Wisconsin are made with the milk from our network of farm families.  Many of these families are multi-generational, passing down the values of hard work and pride to the next generation, ensuring the product you get is of the highest quality.

At lunch time, as you are slicing your favorite flavor of cheese to add to your sandwich or spreading your choice variety of Brewster House on some crackers, think about the factory worker at our creamery, who still employs many of the traditional recipes and techniques from almost a century ago.  We still consider ourselves a family business in many ways and have employed multiple generations of hometown residents since we started in 1934.  Like the farmer, our workers’ commitment to bringing you quality product is top of mind with each batch of cheese produced.

At dinner time, cheese often is the key ingredient in cuisines from all over the world – Mexican, Italian and of course, American.  This American Cheese Month and Memorial Day weekend, fire up the grill with your favorite burger and top with a slice of Shullsburg Creamery burger slices.  Say a quick thanks to the retailer who stocks these slices at your local store and make sure to pay them a visit to stock up on all the cheese you’ll need to continue the celebration of American cheese all month long!  (If you don’t have Shullsburg Creamery cheeses near you, you can still shop at our online store!)

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING

I purchased three kinds of your cheeses and I fell in love. They're just right - Blueberry , Cranberry and my new favorite, Cheddar with Hot Peppers. They have the right balance of pop. So glad I tried your product! I will be hoping you stay at my store!

Meet Rosey, the 2025 Cheesefest Carving

It was one beautiful day at this year's Cheesefest, taking place in historic downtown Water Street earlier this month.  And one of the event's favorite attractions is always the sculpted Cheddar cow.  Shullsburg Creamery proudly donates a 40-pound block of Cheddar each year to sculptor Vicki Janisch, who then does her magic.  We caught up with Vicki to understand the inspiration behind this year's cow!
