Our History

A Rich History Of Fine Wisconsin Cheese

Founded in 1934 by a Danish immigrant, Anton “Tony” Pederson, in the tiny town of Shullsburg, Wisconsin, our company quickly gained a reputation for its hand-crafted, old-style recipes and rich, creamy taste born of fresh milk from farm-raised dairy cows. In the 1940s, Shullsburg Creamery was selected to provide cheese for American soldiers in World War II, and quickly gained a following nationwide as a comforting reminder of home during a trying time. Through the decades, delicious and wholesome Shullsburg Creamery cheese has remained a taste that always feels like home. Since then, Shullsburg Creamery has grown into a diverse and innovative company offering award-winning foods, while still retaining the same authentic, farm-fresh recipes and cheesemaking techniques as the Pederson family almost a century ago. It’s a legacy, a heritage, and a sincere commitment to quality that you can taste in every batch of their delicious Wisconsin cheese. In 2020, Shullsburg Creamery was acquired by Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc, a farmer-owned dairy cooperative established in 1938 with a rich heritage of quality milk production and a network of over 700 farm families. Today, Shullsburg Creamery continues to offer the highest quality products as part of the Prairie Farms family brands.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING

I purchased three kinds of your cheeses and I fell in love. They're just right - Blueberry , Cranberry and my new favorite, Cheddar with Hot Peppers. They have the right balance of pop. So glad I tried your product! I will be hoping you stay at my store!

Meet Rosey, the 2025 Cheesefest Carving

It was one beautiful day at this year's Cheesefest, taking place in historic downtown Water Street earlier this month.  And one of the event's favorite attractions is always the sculpted Cheddar cow.  Shullsburg Creamery proudly donates a 40-pound block of Cheddar each year to sculptor Vicki Janisch, who then does her magic.  We caught up with Vicki to understand the inspiration behind this year's cow!
